English-Speaking Lawyer in Istanbul: Legal Help for Foreigners
English-speaking legal assistance for foreign nationals, overseas families and businesses with property, residence, family or commercial matters in Istanbul. Begin with an English-language document review, and arrange any in-person meeting at our Istanbul or Mersin office.
How to start your Istanbul legal matter
A foreign national with a property, residence, family, commercial, employment, criminal or enforcement matter in Istanbul can usually begin with an English online consultation and a structured document review. Bakırcı & Keskin Hukuk Bürosu receives clients by appointment at its Istanbul office in Maslak/Sarıyer and its Mersin office in Akdeniz. Istanbul representation is assessed according to the competent authority and the work required in the file. Subject to jurisdiction and the steps required in the file, Turkish-law work can be managed or coordinated before competent bodies in Istanbul.
Istanbul office in Maslak: meetings and legal representation
Istanbul office: Maslak Ahi Evran Caddesi, Polaris Plaza No:21, Floor 9, 34475 Sarıyer/İstanbul. In-person meetings can be arranged by appointment at our Istanbul or Mersin office. The review identifies the competent court or authority, the applicable deadline and the scope of representation for your matter.

Request an initial case review
Send the parties’ names, the latest complete document, its notification date and the practical result you seek. Do not send a large unstructured archive before the conflict check.
Why Istanbul files require early route control
Istanbul concentrates land-registry transactions, corporate headquarters, international contracts, employment relationships, ports, airports and a large volume of civil and criminal proceedings. A document that merely says “Istanbul” does not identify the correct court or authority. The relevant district, party address, contract clause, property location, administrative decision and procedural stage must be matched before action.
Matters may be connected with districts such as Beşiktaş, Şişli, Kadıköy, Üsküdar, Bakırköy, Başakşehir, Beylikdüzü, Esenyurt, Fatih or Pendik, while the competent courthouse, enforcement office, land registry or migration unit may follow a different territorial organisation. Current official records must therefore be checked on the date of filing.
Core rights and legal routes for foreign nationals in Istanbul
| Issue | First legal check | Useful first documents |
|---|---|---|
| Residence or immigration decision | Decision type, notification, current status and challenge period | Passport, permit card, application record, full decision and service proof |
| Property purchase or dispute | Title, owner authority, encumbrances, zoning, contract form and payments | Title details, contract, bank records, valuation and correspondence |
| Company or shareholder matter | Exact company identity, registry, articles, resolutions, authority and forum | Trade-registry records, articles, share documents, resolutions and accounts |
| Family or inheritance matter | Jurisdiction, existing orders, civil-status evidence and foreign-document formalities | Certificates, judgments, apostille/finality records, assets and family chronology |
| Criminal investigation | Your procedural status, custody or summons, file location and immediate defence need | Official record, summons, incident chronology and lawfully held evidence |
Foreign nationality does not remove access to Turkish courts or the right to legal representation. It can, however, add questions of notification abroad, certified translation, apostille or legalisation, security for costs in limited contexts, applicable law and enforcement across borders.
Property, company and commercial disputes in Istanbul
High-value Istanbul transactions should separate the asset from the sales presentation. For property, the review should identify the registered parcel and owner, mortgages or annotations, contractual form, construction and occupancy records, payment path and any lease or occupant. A residence objective should be assessed separately; buying an asset does not by itself decide an immigration application.
For companies and contracts, the exact trade-registry entity, signatory authority, applicable terms, delivery or performance evidence, notices, mandatory mediation and jurisdiction clauses are central. An overseas director or shareholder may often begin remotely, but registry acts, notarised corporate decisions and hearings must be planned according to the specific step.
Residence, deportation and administrative decisions
Residence-permit applications, refusals, cancellations, entry restrictions, removal decisions and administrative detention are not interchangeable procedures. The full written decision and proof of notification should be reviewed immediately because the competent remedy and period depend on the legal act.
Do not rely only on an SMS, call-centre statement or screen message if a formal decision exists. Preserve the application form, appointment records, passport pages, address evidence, insurance, income or family documents and every notice received. For official information, YİMER 157 and the Presidency of Migration Management are primary public sources; legal advice remains file-specific.
Working with a Turkish lawyer from abroad
The first stage can usually be completed through an English video meeting, a conflict check and secure copies. The written mandate defines the agreed work; the power of attorney proves authority before third parties. They are not the same document, and broad external authority is not a blanket instruction to settle, waive, sell property or receive money.
Electronic filing and file access may reduce travel, but no promise is made that every Istanbul matter can be completed remotely. Hearings, statements, inspections, original-document production, notarial acts or land-registry steps may require separate arrangements. Professional fees and court, notary, translation, expert, registry and travel costs are identified separately.
Documents for the first Istanbul legal review
Prepare a separate instruction record for each Istanbul matter
An overseas client may have several matters in Istanbul at the same time: a property purchase, a company disagreement and an unpaid personal debt. Start with a separate record for each matter. Identify the parties, the relevant asset or transaction, the latest document, the present procedural stage and the result requested. A single folder labelled “Turkey documents” makes it harder to notice that different entities, courts or instructions are involved. Cross-reference related files while keeping their documents and decisions distinguishable.
For the first review, distinguish what is established from what still needs checking. A bank transfer record may establish that money moved, while the contract and surrounding correspondence are needed to assess why it moved. A property advertisement may describe an apartment, while the registered title identifies the legal asset. A message from a business partner may report a company decision without containing the signed resolution or registry record. Keep the complete source document and explain any missing pages rather than treating a summary as the final evidence.
Plan originals, translations and authority before booking travel
Create a document list showing who holds each original, which language it uses and which authority is expected to receive it. Ask which documents require formal translation, certification or another acceptance step before ordering services. A translation prepared for your own understanding may serve a different purpose from a version submitted to a Turkish public body. Preserve stamps, signatures, reverse pages and attachments in the scan so that the need for an original or additional formality can be assessed accurately.
Travel should follow the required act. Before buying a flight, confirm why physical attendance is needed, which person must attend, what authority the representative already holds and what remains to be arranged. A consultation, a hearing, a statement, a registry act and an inspection are different events. The firm has offices in Istanbul and Mersin. The agreed plan should identify the relevant court or authority, any attendance required outside the office and the associated expense. A general statement that a file can be reviewed online is not a promise that every later stage can be completed remotely.
Use an agreed reporting and payment process
Agree how ordinary updates and urgent documents will be exchanged. An overseas client should provide a working time zone, reliable contact details and a person authorised to receive routine updates if one is needed. An urgent notice should be sent with its complete attachment and relevant date, rather than buried in a long conversation. The response to that notice, the legal filing and the confirmation that the filing reached the correct file should be recorded as separate steps.
A useful report distinguishes completed actions, documents still awaited, decisions requiring client instructions and the next procedural event. It should identify the document or record behind an important statement. “Submitted” should be supported by the submission record; “paid” should identify the correct expense and receipt; “completed” should explain which stage has ended. This format helps a client abroad understand whether the file is waiting for their document, a public authority, the other party or the next scheduled step.
Before transferring money, distinguish professional fees from court, registry, translation, expert and other expenses. Confirm the recipient and purpose through the office’s established contact channel, especially if a message introduces a new account or unusual urgency. Keep receipts with the relevant matter and reconcile any agreed expense advance against the work for which it was provided. The initial review should produce a clear scope and document plan; it does not by itself create an unlimited mandate or authorise every possible transaction.
- Passport or identity details and the names of every relevant party
- The latest complete decision, summons, notice, contract or payment order
- Proof of the date and method of notification
- A one-page chronology with the result you seek
- Contracts, title or registry details, payment records and material correspondence
- Any existing power of attorney, prior-lawyer correspondence or settlement proposal
Remove unrelated passwords and unnecessary private material. Files should be complete, legible and arranged by date. A cropped screenshot may omit the authority, date or attachment that changes the legal route.
Practical Istanbul example
A British shareholder living in Dubai discovers that an Istanbul company has registered a disputed resolution and also stopped paying rent for a company-owned apartment. The review does not treat this as one generic “Istanbul lawyer” problem. It separates trade-registry authority and shareholder remedies from the lease, property ownership and rent evidence; checks limitation, mandatory mediation and competent forums; and identifies which instructions and powers are required for each file. The client receives a staged plan rather than one broad promise.
Istanbul courts, police and institution routes
For Turkish-language courthouse, institution and route information, use the Istanbul legal directory and Istanbul police-station directory. Addresses, territorial divisions and working arrangements can change; verify the competent body through its official source before travelling.
Frequently asked questions about an Istanbul lawyer
How are Istanbul matters coordinated through your offices?
A Turkish lawyer may act before competent courts and authorities throughout Türkiye. The office first checks jurisdiction, hearings, inspections, local acts and foreseeable travel or local-support needs. In-person appointments are available at Polaris Plaza in Maslak/Sarıyer, Istanbul, and at our Akdeniz, Mersin office. Istanbul casework depends on the competent authority and the agreed mandate.
Can the first consultation be held in English?
Yes. The first consultation, document review meeting and routine file reporting can be conducted directly in English or Turkish.
Does owning property automatically secure a residence permit?
No. Property ownership and immigration status are separate legal questions. The current residence-permit category, statutory conditions, address registration and supporting documents must be reviewed independently.
Can I buy property through a power of attorney?
A properly drafted power of attorney may allow defined land-registry and related acts, but title, seller authority, encumbrances, valuation, payment controls and the exact powers granted should be checked before completion.
What should I send after receiving a deportation or residence decision?
Send the complete decision, proof of notification, passport and current status documents immediately. Challenge periods can be short and are calculated from the legally relevant notification event.
Can an Istanbul company dispute be managed while I live abroad?
Often the initial review, registry checks, notices, mediation and many filings can be coordinated remotely. Hearings, inspections or other physical steps are planned separately.
Is a WhatsApp message enough to open a legal file?
No. A message can start the conflict and document check, but representation begins only after scope, identity, professional fee and required authority are agreed.
Is any result or completion date guaranteed?
No. Outcome and duration depend on jurisdiction, evidence, deadlines, the other parties, public authorities and court workload.

Legal and language note
This page provides general information about Turkish law. It does not promise a guaranteed result or a fixed completion date, or claim a foreign-law qualification. Advice requires review of the current law and the specific documents.
