Turkish Citizenship Lawyer | Legal Services for Foreign Applicants

Citizenship is a legal status, not a product that a private adviser can promise. A Turkish citizenship application requires a lawful statutory route, accurate identity and civil-status records, and evaluation by the competent Turkish authorities. Bakırcı & Keskin Law Office assists overseas and foreign applicants with document-based review and lawful legal steps under Turkish Citizenship Law No. 5901 and its implementing regulations.

In-person appointments can be arranged at our offices in Maslak/Sarıyer, Istanbul, and Akdeniz, Mersin. Turkish-law matters involving other provinces are assessed according to the competent authority and the circumstances of each case. Consultations are available in English and Turkish. Which Turkish citizenship route may apply?

Nationality applications cannot be selected by a single marketing checklist. We first identify the legal route and the specific statutory requirements. Under Law No. 5901, ordinary acquisition after residence is governed principally by Article 11; exceptional acquisition, including qualifying investment routes, is governed by Article 12 and the current implementing rules; acquisition through marriage is governed by Article 16. Citizenship based on descent or other legal grounds must be assessed separately.

Residence permission, a work permit, Turkish property ownership or a pending application does not itself grant citizenship. Likewise, statutory eligibility to submit an application is not a guaranteed favourable decision.

Citizenship by investment: legal review before a commitment

Foreign investors should distinguish the immigration, property, commercial, banking and nationality aspects. The investment route and its applicable amount, valuation evidence, bank-transfer trail, encumbrances, holding-period obligations and conformity certificate must be checked against the current official rules before funds move or a property is acquired.

For property purchases, title deed, mortgage and zoning checks remain important even where a proposed investment appears to meet a monetary threshold. For deposits or other financial routes, the relevant authority, holding period and documentary evidence differ. Review our specific guide to bank-deposit citizenship procedures and the property valuation and payment evidence rules.

Residence-based, marriage-based and other citizenship matters

For an ordinary residence-based file, an applicant must establish the qualifying residence and satisfy the statutory conditions in Article 11, including the other legal eligibility elements. The competent authority assesses the facts and security/public-order requirements. Married applicants must not assume that marrying a Turkish citizen automatically confers nationality: Article 16 has its own conditions and assessment.

Prior Turkish nationality, changes in civil status, adoption, identity discrepancies or foreign-issued documents can require another legal route and additional official records. We avoid promising a route without first reviewing the underlying documents.

Detailed citizenship investment guides

The following guides address different investment risks and should not be treated as interchangeable routes: land-registry due diligence for citizenship property, property value and payment evidence, the employment-creation route and SGK records, and government-bond maturity before the holding period ends. Requirements must be checked against the rules in force for the relevant filing.

What does a lawyer do in a citizenship matter?

  1. Eligibility review: examine the statute, applicant’s present nationality and history, immigration status, family situation and proposed investment if any.
  2. Document review: identify passport, birth, marriage, criminal-record, translation, apostille or consular requirements that apply to the actual case.
  3. Process planning: clarify the competent authority, any personal attendance or biometrics, and the stages in which attorney representation is legally permitted.
  4. Administrative correspondence: review missing-document requests, notifications and identity corrections.
  5. Adverse decisions: analyse a written refusal and applicable administrative or judicial remedies according to proper service and statutory deadlines.

We cannot guarantee approval, expedite confidential security checks through unofficial channels or replace the authority’s discretion. A private website’s status tracker is not an official decision.

Residence permits and work permits are separate issues

A foreign applicant may need lawful immigration status while a citizenship file is processed. Residence permits are mainly regulated by Law No. 6458, while work authorisation is regulated by Law No. 6735. Under Article 27 of Law No. 6458, an eligible valid work permit generally counts as residence permission, but an ordinary residence permit does not itself authorise employment.

Frequently asked questions

Does buying any property in Turkey make me a citizen?

No. Only investments satisfying the current legally defined route and its complete documentary and holding conditions can support the applicable citizenship application.

Can a lawyer guarantee citizenship?

No. Citizenship depends on statutory eligibility, the competent authority’s assessment and the individual file.

Is citizenship automatic after five years in Turkey?

No. The residence period is only one of the Article 11 conditions for ordinary naturalisation, and qualifying presence must be assessed under the applicable law.

Does marriage give immediate Turkish nationality?

No. Article 16 imposes specific requirements. Marriage alone does not grant nationality.

Can I apply from outside Turkey?

The correct application authority and any in-person steps depend on the citizenship route and the applicant’s circumstances.

What if my application is refused?

Obtain the written decision and notification details. Any challenge must be selected under the legal basis and time limits relevant to the particular decision.
